Rally against Deutsche Bahn’s involvement in the ‘GPM’ port and railway project in the Brazilian state of Maranhao in Amazonia!
On Friday, 31.05.24 at 10h opposite the DB Tower, at the historic traffic lights, in Berlin (Potsdamer Platz)
We say: STOP THE COLONIAL RAILWAY OF THE GERMAN RAILWAY!
Three Portuguese businessmen are planning to build an export harbour and rail link in the Amazon region of Brazil. The project includes the construction of a deep-sea harbour with a terminal on the small island of Cajual in the Atlantic. The aim is to transport raw materials such as ore, soya and hydrogen to Europe, China and the USA.
Deutsche Bahn is also considering participating in the project, which passes through unique ecosystems and the territories of indigenous communities and the Quilombo, the descendants of enslaved people from Africa. They have all been given insufficient or no information about the project – which violates the ILO-169 Convention on the Protection of Indigenous Peoples, among other things. Germany has also ratified this treaty.
This would not be the first participation in a project that jeopardises the environment and human rights. The ‘Tren Maya’ megaproject in Mexico is also highly controversial. At the same time, Deutsche Bahn is promoting itself in Germany as ‘Germany’s fastest climate protector’ or with the slogan ‘Climate protection can also be easy’.
But there is resistance on the ground, for example from the organisation Justiça nos Trilhos (JnT) – on 31 May, we will also take the protest against the GPM project to the DB headquarters!
